Party Policy

Abita Mystery House offers a unique environment for private parties including eccentric lighting, covered walkways, a 20' x 20' front porch area, and a 23' x 22' inside room (our art studio/classroom space) which can be transformed into a dancehall or set up to serve a buffet. We can make all of this available to you any evening after 5 PM. We also are willing to work with you for inexpensive, customized children's birthday parties during our regular hours. The Abita Mystery House is a folk art museum of recycled art by local artist John Preble. The centerpieces are his miniature scenes of Southern life, sort of 3-D cartoons featuring push button action and poking friendly fun at our local culture. The UCM also houses several collections of items from the early to mid 20th Century, including bicycles, radios, over 150 paint by number paintings (painted), working arcade machines, barbed wire and license plates. This unusual museum actually likes kids and recognizes the value of the tactile experience.

Evening Party: We can accommodate up to 150 people, for a 3 to 4 hour event, starting after 5 PM, for the basic price of $400. A longer time is negotiable. You are responsible for all food and beverages. A $100 damage / reservation deposit is required when the space is reserved. It will be refunded the day following the party, assuming no damage. A UCM staff member will be at the museum 1 ½ hours before the party starts and ½ hour after the party is set to end, unless other arrangements are made. We are located in a residential area. We prefer that most parties end by 11:30 PM, so we can close by midnight. Exceptions may be made. Access for decorating purposes can easily be arranged for earlier on the day of the event, or the day before depending on the schedule. In most cases, party supplies may be dropped off the day before the event. The gift shop is the main entrance to the facility and part of the UCM experience and so we usually arrange to have a staff member sitting at the register. Smoking is only allowed on the porches outside of the facility. No alcohol may be served to minors. Police detail is inexpensive and required for parties of 100 or more.

Children's Party: In the simplest version, you can serve all refreshments at home and bring the group in for $2 a head (minimum $20), extra quarters are highly recommended. We request that you bring at least one adult per 10 kids. ALL adults in your party are admitted free. No deposit is required but you must call ahead to reserve your time. We are very willing to negotiate with you to provide space for serving refreshments, to add staff, to arrange for party games or a craft project, or for any other services. A deposit may be required.
